Yuzuru Yamakawa (1933 -)

1933 Born in Asahikawa in Hokkaido
Studied at Kuwasawa Design Institute
1952 Joined design development of rattan chairs at Yamakawa Rattan Co. Ltd. (Yamakawa Rattan International Co. Ltd.) founded by Shichiro Yamakawa and awarded Tokyo Metropolitan Governor Prize
1957 Awarded Milan Triennial Golden Prize with Trii Stool jointly designed by Watanabe and others. Many products by Yamakawa Rattan were awarded worldwide prizes including the rattan stools designed by Isamu Kenmochi to MoMA Permanent Collections
Building close relation and collaboration with masters of modern arts, Yamakawa Rattan is now a leading company in the modern furniture era with its quality and reliability.
1987 Government of Indonesia suspended export of Rattan materials.
Due to this measure, production of rattan furniture in Japan was also suspended, however, Yuzuru Yamakawa went to Indonesia in 1990 to take an initiative for starting operation of Rattan Factory in Cirebon as an expert at JODC. Since the design quality of rattan products in Indonesia was quite low then, he also contributed to fostering and promotion of not only rattan industry but designers in Indonesia by making Cirebon Design Center and Factory open to public.

Eiri Iwakura (1948 -)

1948 Born in Fukushima Prefecture
1981 Established Rockstone, designer shop
1985 Founded Eiri Iwakura Sculpting Development and Research Center
Building his own brand, "Rockstone," he also worked with overseas designers and architects. During 1994 - 96, he produced "Exhibition of Chairs made with Japanese Trees" in Hida, Takayama, Nagoya and Tokyo and introduced the joint brand with the woodcrafter group, "Takayama Woodworks."
In 2001, produced Yudonoan in Yukawa Onsen (hot spring) in Yamagata Prefecture and joined the project of Myojin Kan in Tobira Onsen (hot spring) in Nagano in 2003 featuring concepts of space and furniture for Japanese style hotel making. His ideas are not limited to mere design concept but cover realistic production and distribution to express new cultural and life style aspects far beyond the conventional interior design. He is a winner of IFFT Gold Prize with Rakufuan, leather net furniture, in 2003, Good Design Award in 2004 and many others. Recently presented ÒKiri (paulownia) Chest in Milano Salone in Italy featuring paulownia wood material.
Iwakura is now working on the project, Kamo, to foster Japan Brand and presented to exhibitions in Shanghai and Frankfurt Messe, which also contributed for collaborating modern design with traditional art in Japan.
2006Opened a brand shop in Omotesando in Tokyo, "Rockstone Omotesando".

Nanna Dizel (1923- 2005)

1923 Born in Copenhagen in Denmark
Studied cabinet production in Charles School
Studied in School of Arts and Craft and Royal Academy of Fine Arts
1946 Opened a design house with Jorgen Dizel
Challenging new material and technique, she worked on various types of designs for cabinet, jewelry, tableware and etc by applying fiber glass/wickerwork/foam rubber to traditional textiles.
She lived in London from 1968 to 1986 and founded Interspace with Kurt Heide. Working on mostly furniture design, she created Hanging Chair, one of her representative works, in 1957. Beside furniture, she also designed silver jewelry for Georg Jensen featuring organic form and textile for Kvadrat.

Toshio Yano (1925 - 2005)

Yano is one of the frontiers that worked on development and design of furniture adopting the human engineering concept for stools, chairs and various types of furniture.

1970 Produced "Yano Toshio Design Lab"
1980 Engaged in teaching at Education Department, Hirosaki University
1990 Retired form Hirosaki University

He stayed in Hirosaki after his retirement since he got interested in Jomon Culture and continued working furniture design
